What are the chakras? Chakra is a Sanskrit term meaning circle or wheel. Each chakra corresponds to an energy center in the body; it is a focal point of bioenergetic activity; it draws chi (or spiritual energy) from the Cosmos and distributes this energy through the major nerves branching from the spinal column.

There are six of these wheels stacked in a column of energy that spans from the base of the spine to the middle of the forehead. The seventh extends out from the crown of the head.

Here is a brief overview of the chakras:

First Chakra --  Base, or Root Chakra The root chakra’s location is at the base of the spine. The colors associated with this energy are red and black. The first chakra is often called the “survival center.”

Second Chakra -- Sacral Chakra The second chakra’s location is approximately two inches below the naval area. Its energy pattern resonates to the color orange. This chakra is considered the “social center.” It is involved in sexuality and physical vitality.

Third Chakra—Solar Plexus Chakra The third chakra’s location is at the solar plexus, two inches below the breastbone in the center behind the stomach. Called the “solar,” or the “will center,” this chakra’s energy oversees the will and our ability to focus on a particular purpose. The solar chakra colors are yellow and yellowish-green.

Fourth Chakra—Heart Center Chakra The fourth chakra’s location is at the center of the chest. The heart center resonates with compassion, empathy, and unconditional love. It infuses the body with the life force. The heart chakra colors are pink and green.
